Dr. Sara Alvarez offers a unique blend of wide clinical experience and a background in basic science. Her goal is to care for her patients holistically using cutting edge scientific breakthroughs, lifestyle optimization including nutrition, rest, exercise and life fulfillment. This involves a detailed custom treatment for each patient for their vision health, comfort and goals. She does this through spectacles, contact lenses, vision training, medications and simple health routines so that her patients can keep their best vision throughout their life.
A native of California, Dr. Alvarez did her undergraduate (B.S. in Immunology) and graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. She completed her first clinical doctorate at UCB with Professor Irving Fatt where she investigated the wetting angle of contact lens materials. She went to England for her second doctorate in visual psychophysics and electrophysiology at the University of Manchester and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. She completed her doctorate thesis and has published many scientific papers in refereed journals on the investigation of color vision basic mechanisms and clinical application of tests for the monitoring of disease progress and pharmaceutical intervention. The optic nerve related diseases she has researched include glaucoma, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis and familial optic atrophy. She achieved tenure at the University of Manchester in the Department of Vision Science. She was then recruited to return to the USA by University of Alabama, Birmingham to join their faculty. She has been in clinical practice at Pfister Vision for 30 years and enjoys the mix of clinical and research work.
Her patients receive a thorough examination of their lifestyle visual needs and health status. Her exams take into account current medications, health conditions such as autoimmune disease, thyroid disease, diabetes, blood pressure heart conditions and hormonal balance. She then provides her patients a thorough education on how to preserve their best health.
Treatments may include pharmacological (including 6 new treatments for dry eye disease) nonprescription supplements, herbal, and special compounded medications. Dr. Alvarez also works with difficult refractive problems including prism correction for double vision, computer glasses, driving glasses and occupation glasses. She strives to find the root cause of any vision problems and treat them including specialty contact lenses, scleral contact lenses, moisture glasses and more.
Dr. Alvarez is very experienced in managing pre- and post-operative care having worked closely with renowned surgeon Dr. Roswell Pfister for 30 years. She especially loves caring for corneal transplant patients to ensure clarity and longevity of their corneal transplants.
She is a member and regular attendee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meetings to keep abreast of the latest scientific and clinical advancements in vision science.
In addition to her fulfilling professional life, Dr. Alvarez has many cultural pursuits including playing the piano and Dance. Dr. Alvarez owns the Magnolia Ballroom where she teaches Argentine Tango and offers the public the opportunity to socialize, exercise and express themselves in a safe, easily assessable setting with 12 other world class dance instructors. She takes her tango students on an annual pilgrimage to Argentina as well at attending other dance festivals in the USA. Her adventurous nature has led her to participate in extreme snow skiing, sailing, planes and motorcycling.
